High-Profile Officer-Involved Shooting Cases

High-Profile Officer-Involved Shooting Cases

When the topic turns to officer-involved shooting cases, the tragedy isn’t just in the cases we discuss below—it’s in the fact that it was nearly impossible to narrow down the list to the five victims listed here. No matter where you turn, which state you look into, or what year you look at, there’s cases involving unarmed victims getting shot by the police. If you or someone you love has been injured, our officer-involved shooting attorneys are here to advocate for you.

Going up against the police is difficult—they have lots of support and no shortage of legal funding. Having an attorney experienced in civil rights violations is critical. Founded by attorney Dale K. Galipo, the Law Offices of Dale K. Galipo focus on injustices committed by the police and helping people like you get justice.

Jayland Walker

In June 2022, Jayland Walker was fatally shot by Akron police officers when they attempted to pull him over. A car chase ensued, and police claimed that there was a shot from the car. When Walker stopped and fled on foot, officers opened fire, shooting 94 times in 6.7 seconds. While no one is arguing that leading police on a car chase is acceptable, shooting a fleeing suspect in the back seems to combat claims of officers being in imminent harm. A grand jury opted not to press charges and the police department found that the officers were in compliance. Surviving family members ultimately received a $4.85 million settlement with the assistance of an officer-involved shooting lawyer.

Amir Locke

In Minneapolis, an area rife with officer-involved shooting controversies, police officers were serving a no-knock search warrant at a downtown apartment in February 2022. The search warrant was regarding Amir Locke’s cousin, with whom Locke was staying. He was not named in the warrant. When police entered, Locke sat up from the couch with a gun in his hands. The police shot him three times within ten seconds of entering the apartment. Criminal charges were not filed, but the city did move forward with a ban on no-knock warrants. The civil suit brought by his family is ongoing and the court denied the police’s request to throw out the lawsuit.

Mansur Ball-Bey

In 2015, St. Louis police officers shot and killed Mansur Ball-Bey while executing a search warrant at a house. Although Ball-Bey was present, it was not his house. He fled the scene, and police alleged he had a firearm, but his family claimed that the gun was planted. Those who protested the shooting indicate that Ball-Bey was clearly fleeing and was not an immediate threat to the officers. Criminal charges were never filed, but the family was awarded $18.75 million in a civil suit with the assistance of an officer-involved shooting law firm.

Laquan McDonald

In October 2014 in the city of Chicago, teenager Laquan McDonald was shot by a police officer. The officer responded to reports that the teen was wandering down the street and behaving erratically, refusing to put down a knife and lunging at officers. For more than a year, police refused to release the body camera footage. The footage revealed that McDonald had been walking away when he was shot 16 times by the officer. The officer was found guilty of second-degree murder, sentenced to prison in January 2019, and released early just three years later for good behavior. The family received a $5 million settlement from the city. As any officer-involved shooting attorney will tell you, a police officer actually being tried and found guilty is a rare outcome.

Walter Scott

North Charleston man Walter Scott was shot by a police officer while fleeing a traffic stop on foot. The police officer responsible initially claimed that Scott had grabbed his Taser and that he feared for his life. However, camera footage showed that Scott never grabbed the taser and was five to six meters away when he was shot five times and killed. The officer then dropped the Taser next to Scott. The officer, Michael Slater, was sentenced to 20 years in prison. An officer-involved shooting lawyer worked with the Scott family to secure a $6.5 million settlement.
